Hi there πŸ‘‹

I'm Frances Ruganyumisa (he/him) β€” a networking and security engineer focused on microservices, network automation, and IoT security research. I design and build secure, resilient systems and automation to reduce toil and speed up safe deployments.

Frances's GitHub stats

About me

  • πŸ” Currently building microservices and automation tooling for network and security teams
  • 🌱 Researching IoT device security, firmware hardening, and secure OTA processes
  • πŸ‘― Open to collaborate on SDN, network automation, and security automation projects
  • ⚑ Fun fact: I enjoy pairing on hard problems and learning new attack/defense techniques

Areas of focus

  • Microservices architecture & secure API design
  • Network automation & orchestration (Ansible, Terraform, Nornir, Netmiko)
  • Security automation: detection, triage and automated response
  • IoT security: device analysis, firmware protections, threat modeling
  • SDN, BGP, routing fundamentals, and service mesh concepts
  • Containerization & orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)

Skills & tooling

  • Languages: Python, Bash (familiar with Go and JavaScript)
  • Automation & infra: Ansible, Terraform, Nornir, Netmiko, GitHub Actions
  • Cloud & containers: Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Prometheus, Grafana
  • Security: vulnerability assessment, threat modeling, detection engineering
  • Networking: routing & switching, BGP, SDN controllers, network observability

Selected projects

Below are example project templates and the kinds of repositories I build or contribute to.

  • Network Automation Framework β€” a collection of playbooks and scripts to provision, validate, and test network devices at scale. ( network-automation)

  • Security Automation Playbooks β€” automated detection -> triage -> response workflows that integrate SIEM/EDR alerts with orchestration tooling. ( security-playbooks)

  • Secure Microservices Reference β€” sample microservices demonstrating secure defaults (authentication, mTLS, rate limiting, logging). ( secure-microservices-sample)

  • IoT Analysis Toolkit β€” tools to analyze firmware, identify insecure configurations, and prototype mitigations. ( iot-security-tools)

  • SDN Proofs-of-Concept β€” small demos showing SDN controller integrations, programmability, and service chaining. ( sdn-poc)

How I work / Contributions

  • I aim for reproducible automation: infra-as-code, idempotent playbooks, and unit-tested scripts.
  • I document threat models, test cases, and expected telemetry for all security projects.
  • I prefer small, iterative PRs with clear test plans and CI checks.

If you'd like to collaborate, open an issue, or send a PR to any repo, I review and respond to collaboration requests.
