Nutritional Data

Joshua Eric Turcotte edited this page Feb 4, 2019 · 1 revision

Of all the data involved in this project, the nutritional data is the easiest to get. For that, we proceed first to the USDA Food and Nutrient System. Presently, they offer two data sets.

USDA Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies

Found here, this data set provides the nutrient values of foods and beverages.

USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference

The USDA refers to this as 'legacy' data but, for our purposes, this is the more honest dataset in that it includes raw ingredients.

USDA Branded Food Products Database

Herein is a larger dataset which appears to include many of the same ingredients by the brand that sell them, along with a great deal of processed products.

FoodData Central

To quote the USDA, all of these datasets, including the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), SR Legacy, and the USDA Branded Food Products Database, will transition to FoodData Central, a new and harmonized USDA food and nutrient data system. FoodData Central will also include expanded nutrient content information never before available as well as links to diverse data sources that offer related agricultural, food, health, dietary supplement, and other information. Check back often to this page for updates on the transition to FoodData Central.
