FXRatesAPI is a foreign exchange rates REST API that delivers real-time and historical currency exchange rates for 185+ fiat currencies plus major cryptocurrencies and precious metals. It exposes JSON endpoints for the latest rates, historical rates for any past date, time-series ranges, currency conversion, and a currencies list. All endpoints are served from a single base host, https://api.fxratesapi.com, over HTTPS (HTTP/2, TLS 1.3).
- Free / limited tier — no API key required. During this review (2026-07-12)
GET /latest,/historical,/timeseries,/convert, and/currenciesall returned HTTP 200 with valid JSON when called anonymously. An obviously invalidapi_keyvalue was ignored (the request still succeeded as anonymous) rather than rejected. - Paid tiers — API key required for the good stuff. Higher monthly request quotas, more frequent rate updates, base-currency switching, and full historical depth are gated behind a paid API key, per the pricing page.
- How the key is passed: as the
api_keyquery parameter (confirmed accepted, HTTP 200) or as anAuthorization: Bearer YOUR_KEYheader (per the authentication docs). - Pricing values are not reconciled. The
fxratesapi.com/pricingpage is client-rendered and could not be read without signing in, so exact tier names, prices, and quotas inplans/andfinops/are modeled and markedreconciled: false.

Returns the most recent exchange rates for a chosen base currency against all or a selected set of currencies. GET /latest accepts base and currencies (comma-separated) query parameters.

- No OHLC endpoint. Unlike several competing FX APIs, FXRatesAPI does not expose an open/high/low/close endpoint.
GET /ohlc(and path variants) returnedEndpoint Not Found, and no OHLC page appears in the docs sitemap. It is deliberately excluded from this catalog rather than modeled. - No WebSocket API. FXRatesAPI's public surface is entirely request/response REST over HTTPS. There is no documented WebSocket (
wss://) or SSE streaming channel; rate updates are obtained by polling/latest.
