A Datathon is an event focused on the collection and archiving of 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing.

Its purpose is:
- Facilitating the proper deposition and archiving of 16S rRNA gene amplicon data and metadata in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)'s Sequence Read Archives (SRA)
- The generation of local microbiome databases for local and global reuse
To facilitate the sharing of data we have created two tutorials:
- To submit sequence data to the NCBI Portal
- To generate compatible metadata tables, when sequence data has already been archived in NCBI but will be included in the local database.
