WinCompose does not recognize the characters ä ö ü ß in the custom .XCompose file.

I have the following two lines in my .XCompose file:

<Multi_key> <t> <t> : "test" # test
<Multi_key> <a> <e> : "ä"    # a + e

The test line shows up in my user-defined macros but the line with ä is missing.
How can I fix this?

my .XCompose.txt file is saved in UTF-8.

I also noticed that issue with the newest version.
Actually ö,ü,ß,€ work for me. Ä too, just not "ä".

My config is the following

<Multi_key> <a> : "ä"
<Multi_key> <A> : "Ä"
<Multi_key> <o> : "ö"
<Multi_key> <O> : "Ö"
<Multi_key> <u> : "ü"
<Multi_key> <U> : "Ü"
<Multi_key> <e> : "€"
<Multi_key> <s> : "ß"

Actually all lines work except the first one, I cannot write ä at all.
This used to work in 0.9.10, but not in .11

Update: I opened the xcompose file, and notepad.exe said its saved as "utf8 with bom".
Then I saved it as regular UTF-8 and the ä got fixed too.
