Set keyboard layout for installed system

After install with the installer script, the keyboard layout was the default US one. It would be nice to select a keyboard layout from the UI/installer_script directly as other installers do this, instead of having to do this later in the installed system.

Maybe it would also be possible to query the currently used layout of the website/script user?

I have been testing the installer these last few days.

First of all, thank you for the good work you have done.

Regarding this specific issue, in addition to ceaea26 it would be necessary to write the value of ${KEYMAP} in the XKBLAYOUT line of the system file /etc/vconsole.conf

In pseudo code it would be something like XKBLAYOUT="us" --> XKBLAYOUT="${KEYMAP}"

Otherwise, if you do not manually change this value after installation, the "us" provided by the installer will always be present on the login screen.

Are you saying that even when you change the KEYMAP value in installer.ini, this does not end up in the installed system's /etc/vconsole.conf file correctly? It is quite possible, I don't think I've ever tested this properly...

I just installed with latest image and having set KEYMAP=de-latin1 in the installer.ini. The installed file /etc/vconsole.conf says:

# KEYBOARD CONFIGURATION FILE

# Consult the keyboard(5) manual page.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="us"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

BACKSPACE="guess"

That's the same output as in /etc/default/keyboard.

Unfortunately, whatever systemd-firstboot sets gets overwritten by debian packages which "own" the files in /etc and, so far, I wasn't able to do anything about it.

At least I have added an FAQ question with the following solution (applicable on both the installer and installed system):

sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration
sudo setupcon
