Direction arrows not working

The red arrows used to point the player back to the game area are not working on the quest and are small and offset below the player on the rift. Probably an artifact of updating to the latest unity.

Tried a bunch of stuff in 1.3.5 but it still doesn't work on the quest, works fine on the PC, not sure what the deal is with overlay canvases, it worked on the GearVR.
