Except the USA, the whole world use the metric system as unit. So a grid with 5mm as unit lenght would be useful (In French, we say "papier à petits carreaux" for the paper with a grid of 5mm, see https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Réglure#Réglures_fréquemment_utilisées). We also use "papier millimétré" (grid of 1mm lenght).
When I see this in the documentation:
I though it was a $5\times5$ mm grid.
But according to the code, line 30 of the .dtx file:
\usepackage[pattern=stdeight, textarea,
it is a grid of 0.125in $(\frac{1}{8}\times2.54=0.3175\text{ cm})$.
We can customise (patternsize={⟨length ⟩}) but having standard options can be useful, for the whole world (except for the USA, which will newer use standard units).
