Speech Protocol Implementation — Text-to-Speech & Advanced Transcription

Safebox v0.18 — Protocol.Speech and Enhanced Protocol.Transcription

🎯 Overview

Two new capabilities added to Safebox:

  1. Text-to-Speech (TTS) via POST /v1/speech — Generate audio from text
  2. Enhanced Transcription via existing POST /v1/transcribe — Better ASR with VibeVoice-ASR

Models:

  • VibeVoice-1.5B (TTS) — 90-minute multi-speaker synthesis, English + Chinese
  • VibeVoice-Realtime-0.5B (TTS) — Streaming single-speaker, English-only
  • VibeVoice-ASR-7B (Transcription) — 60-minute single-pass with diarization, 50+ languages

All MIT licensed, all run on-premise, all maintain Safebox's zero-data-exfiltration guarantee.

📊 Model Comparison Matrix

Text-to-Speech Models

Model Type Max Length Speakers Languages Hardware Speed Streaming
VibeVoice-1.5B Long-form 90 min 4 EN, ZH 1× H100 80GB 0.5× real-time
VibeVoice-Realtime-0.5B Real-time Unlimited 1 EN 1× H100 40GB 1× real-time
VibeVoice-Large-7B Long-form 90 min 4 EN, ZH 1× H100 80GB 0.3× real-time

Transcription Models

Model Max Length Speakers Diarization Languages Hardware Speed
VibeVoice-ASR-7B 60 min Unlimited ✅ Built-in 50+ 1× A100 80GB 15× real-time
Whisper Large v3 30 sec chunks 1 ❌ Separate 99 1× A100 40GB 50× real-time

Recommendation:

  • VibeVoice-ASR-7B for multi-speaker audio >5 minutes
  • Whisper v3 for single-speaker <5 minutes or real-time dictation

🏗️ Architecture — Speech Protocol

New Endpoint: POST /v1/speech

Purpose: Text → Audio (inverse of transcription)

Wire Format: Safebox canonical (camelCase, flat, X-Safebox-* headers)

Response Types:

  1. Inline (audio <5MB) → base64-encoded audio in JSON body
  2. URL (audio >5MB) → runner-local URL for _fetchRunnerResource fetch

Cache Strategy:

  • Default: prefix mode (cache enabled)
  • Key: sha256(model + text + speakers + format + sampleRate + speed + language + seed)
  • Tenant-scoped: No cross-tenant cache sharing (privacy boundary)

📋 Wire Protocol Specification

Headers (Incoming — all X-Safebox-*)

X-Safebox-Request-Id: <uuid>          # REQUIRED
X-Safebox-Tenant: <community-id>      # REQUIRED
X-Safebox-Cache-Mode: prefix | none # optional, default 'prefix'
X-Safebox-Cache-Tag: <opaque>         # optional
X-Safebox-Priority: high | normal | low  # optional
X-Safebox-Timeout-Ms: <int>           # optional

Request Body — Single-Speaker

{
  "model": "vibevoice-1.5b",
  "text": "Hello world. This is a test of long-form speech synthesis.",
  "format": "mp3",
  "sampleRate": 24000,
  "speed": 1.0,
  "language": "en",
  "speakers": [
    {
      "id": "narrator",
      "voicePreset": "alice"
    }
  ]
}

Fields:

  • model (required): vibevoice-1.5b, vibevoice-realtime-0.5b, vibevoice-large-7b
  • text (required for single-speaker): Text to synthesize
  • format (optional): mp3 (default), wav, opus, flac
  • sampleRate (optional): 16000, 24000 (default), 44100, 48000
  • speed (optional): 0.5 to 2.0, default 1.0
  • language (optional): en (default), zh
  • speakers (required): Array of speaker definitions

Request Body — Multi-Speaker (Conversational)

{
  "model": "vibevoice-1.5b",
  "format": "mp3",
  "sampleRate": 24000,
  "speakers": [
    { "id": "A", "voicePreset": "alice" },
    { "id": "B", "voicePreset": "carter" }
  ],
  "turns": [
    { "speaker": "A", "text": "Welcome to the podcast." },
    { "speaker": "B", "text": "Thanks for having me." },
    { "speaker": "A", "text": "Let's talk about long-form synthesis." }
  ]
}

Multi-speaker use cases:

  • Podcasts (2-4 hosts)
  • Audiobooks with dialogue
  • Educational content with narrator + characters
  • Training materials with interviewer + subject

Request Body — Voice Cloning (Consent-Gated)

{
  "model": "vibevoice-1.5b",
  "text": "This voice was cloned with the speaker's permission.",
  "speakers": [
    {
      "id": "speaker-1",
      "referenceAudio": {
        "data": "<base64 wav>",
        "format": "wav",
        "consent": true
      }
    }
  ]
}

⚠️ CRITICAL CONSENT GATE:

# Runner MUST enforce this validation
if speaker.has("referenceAudio"):
    if not speaker["referenceAudio"].get("consent") == True:
        raise HTTPException(
            status_code=400,
            detail="Voice cloning requires explicit consent. Set referenceAudio.consent=true only if you have documented permission from the voice owner."
        )

License terms make this non-negotiable. MIT license allows use, but prohibits:

  • Impersonation
  • Deepfake creation
  • Real-time voice conversion without consent

Protocol layer enforces this before leaving Safebox; runner enforces again (defense in depth).

Response — Short Audio (<5MB, inline)

{
  "model": "vibevoice-1.5b",
  "data": "<base64 mp3 bytes>",
  "format": "mp3",
  "mimeType": "audio/mpeg",
  "duration": 12.4,
  "usage": {
    "audioSeconds": 12.4,
    "charactersIn": 187
  }
}

Response — Long Audio (>5MB, URL)

{
  "model": "vibevoice-1.5b",
  "url": "/v1/speech/result/req_abc123",
  "format": "mp3",
  "mimeType": "audio/mpeg",
  "duration": 5400.0,
  "usage": {
    "audioSeconds": 5400.0,
    "charactersIn": 84000
  }
}

URL must be runner-local path (not external). Safebox fetches via _fetchRunnerResource over same Unix socket.

Example: 90-minute audiobook → ~100MB mp3 → too large for JSON body → return URL → Safebox fetches once and streams to capability.

Response Headers (All 8 Required)

X-Safebox-Request-Id: <echo>                    # REQUIRED
X-Safebox-Runner-Id: safebox-model-tts-1
X-Safebox-Model-Id: vibevoice-1.5b
X-Safebox-Cache-Hit: true | false
X-Safebox-Cache-Tokens-Reused: 187 # characters reused from cached prefix
X-Safebox-Queue-Wait-Ms: 45
X-Safebox-Compute-Ms: 12400
X-Safebox-Capacity-Hint: available | near-saturated | saturated

Note: Cache-Tokens-Reused is misnamed for TTS (no tokens), but we keep the name for protocol consistency. Use it to report characters reused from cached prefix.

🎙️ Voice Presets

VibeVoice-1.5B built-in voice presets:

Preset Gender Age Accent Description
alice Female 30s American Warm, professional narrator
betty Female 40s British Authoritative, clear
carter Male 30s American Conversational, friendly
david Male 40s British Deep, formal

Custom voices via reference audio:

  • Provide 5-30 seconds of clean audio
  • Speaker must consent (referenceAudio.consent: true)
  • Model adapts to speaker's voice characteristics
