Finished my first full playthrough of the mod last night. Played on Normal through the Library, brought it up to Legendary because I was worried the flood wouldn't be scary enough, then brought it down to Heroic for the rest. Overall it was an amazing experience. I was totally giddy in the opening cutscene. The gameplay translates so smoothly to VR, and it felt so refreshing to play a game in VR that didn't feel hampered by the medium (E.G. Half Life Alyx.)
I do have some criticisms, and recommendations for improvements.
- The assault rifle muzzle flare is obnoxiously bright and giant when in VR-- fine for the original game, but makes VR aiming impractical. A size reduction would improve comfort.
- The Sniper rifle is awkward to aim effectively in VR without a shoulder rest or physical object. I found the ideal way to fire was to cradle my shooting hand against my body, but this hurt immersion. Some amount of aim assist or more tuning on the 4x scope drag on my part might help.
- Turrets and Tanks are made unusable because of how thumbstick aiming is imprecise with VR controllers. Alternative input methods (E.G. hand tracking) would improve usability.
- Third person driving was acceptable, but I can't help but feel it would be more fun in First person.
- Horizontal lock of the HUD is probably unavoidable but ideally it would follow head in any direction.
- Jumping and Crouching being tied to the thumbstick was diabolical. I was constantly banging my head on the ceiling of the pillar of autumn. First thing I did was change jump to a button press and leave crouch as a physical movement.
- Switch hands function seemed totally useless. It would usually accidentally trigger when trying to two hand a weapon. I disabled it and had a much smoother experience
- Controller bindings in general I just set to vanilla console halo and found it worked best, most comfortable for me and also I already memorized the layout over the years.
- Some overlays appeared to be sized incorrectly throughout my playthrough
- Pause menu was squished and only fit like 4 buttons
- No text lined up inside their respective buttons
- Cutscene effects were far too small- E.G. Jenkin's footage effect appeared as small box in center of vision while cutscene played around me.
Overall the experience was amazing. I'm saddened that there aren't many others like this in VR right now. I may jump right into a second playthrough or try my hand at SPV3 VR. Playing this actually spurred me to upgrade my headset. Played the first few missions on my original Rift before upgrading to a Quest 3- Halo's still a console seller in 2025 I guess XD. It took me weeks to get this game working and I even ended up ordering an original CD to play it, I was just so excited about the prospect of this I had to get it working somehow.
I'm so thankful for the work you've done here, it's really amazing. I know you're probably totally exhausted by this and it's a pretty thankless endeavor overall. (I see people already hounding for Halo 2) I just want to express how amazing your work was here, and I'm excited to see what you do next!
